1. Romain Bouchard Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey 2006 - £16.95
per bottle
Chablis (Burgundy), France
Dry White (Cork), 12.5% abv
Son of Pascal Bouchard, Romain took over this small estate in
2005, converting it to organic farming. Partial vinification in
oak gives a nutty and gently buttery note on the nose, with ripe
and rich orchard fruit and a hint of salty minerality. On the
palate this is delightfully full, fruity and yet locked in the
grip of that mineral and lemon acidity and bracing structure.
Manages to be creamy and rich, yet at the same time pin-sharp
and very long. A stunning Chablis.
Score: 94/11
2. Château de Chasseloir Comte Leloup Muscadet, Cuvée
des Ceps Centenaires 2005 - £8.95 per bottle
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine (Loire), France
Dry White (Cork), 12.0% abv
A bit special this, coming from ungrafted, 100-year-old Melon
de Bourgogne vines. It has a particularly aromatic nose, with
quite pungent, vivid fruit like a tuned-down Marlborough Sauvignon:
punchy lime, some tropical notes and a beautifully flinty, mineral
background. On the palate this is equally thrilling, riven with
pristine fruit and acidity and subtly layered. Prince amongst
Muscadets, we salute you!
Score: 91/100
3. Domaine Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Tradition 2007 - £11.95
- per bottle
Sancerre (Loire), France
Dry White (Cork), 12.5% abv
Fleuriet's Sancerre comes from hand-picked vineyards and is,
of course, 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Fine, fruity nose, with plenty
of gooseberry and succulent yellow plum, but a nice nettley, grassy
background too. On the palate it is well-delineated and balanced,
with a poised elegance but a good thrust of fruit and acidity.
FvD say it is 'made in heaven' for Dover Sole.
Score: 89/100
4. Domaine de la Motte Chablis Premier Cru Beauroy 2006 - £12.95
per bottle
Chablis (Burgundy), France
Dry White (Cork), 13.0% abv
There's a sense of leesy richness on the nose of this wine, that
perhaps supresses the Chablis 'nervosity' a little, but offers
a sense of buttery weight. On the palate this wine does indeed
have some stuffing, with plenty of lemon and apple fruit and a
certain breadth. A Chablis that comes into its own with slightly
richer, creamier fish or chicken dishes.
Score: 88/100
5. Viña Sanzo Verdejo 2008 - £8.65 per bottle
Rueda, Spain
Dry White (Cork), 12.5% abv
The Gang are fans of the Verdejo wines from Spain's Rueda region,
sited close to steamy Madrid but at a significantly higher altitude.
Some Verdejo's are pungent lookalikes for Kiwi Sauvignon, but
not this: here there's steel at the core of a lime and gently
herbal wine, with the palate lean and gripped by a mineral and
citrus acidity and just a touch of gooseberry. Whilst others lean
more towards Marlborough, this is Rueda's answer to Sancerre.
Drink it with fish and seafood.
Score: 88/100
6. Domaine Octavie Touraine Sauvignon 2008 - £7.95 per
bottle
Touraine (Loire), France
Dry White (Cork), 12.5% abv
There's a spritzy brightness to the nose of this Sauvignon Blanc,
with cool limey fruit, a hint of something passionfruity and more
ripe, but a sense of cool minerality throughout. On the palate
it is focused, crisp and bone dry, with steely acidity into the
finish.
Score: 87/100
7. Markus Molitor Haus Klosterberg Riesling Trocken 2007 - £9.95
per bottle
Mosel, Germany
Dry White (Cork), 12.0% abv
Molitor is a good, interesting and idiosyncratic producer, but
we find this, the only German wine on FromVineyardsDirect's list,
a touch underwhelming. It has a citrus and apple nose with some
leesiness, but all rather neutral. The palate has an intense lime
and lemon cut, the acidity is ripe and full, leaving this fairly
powerful and dry in style, but simple and a touch shorter than
we'd like.
