Hugel and Fils wine
Hugel & Fils Wines
The Hugel family in Alsace can be traced all the way back to the 15th
century. Since the Middle Ages, Riquewihr has been renowned for some
of the most noble wines in France, just one of the many reasons why
Hugel & Fils wines have been so successful over the years.
The Hugel family’s vineyard estates cover more than 25 hectares,
exclusively in Riquewihr, almost half of which are classed as Grand
Cru.
Thanks to its privileged geographical situation, Alsace is one of the
driest wine region in France. Its unique micro-climate is caused by
maritime influences, and by the way in which the Vosges mountains give
protection to the land. This climate results in a cool and long growing
season which in turn produces unique dry wine with great finesse and
unequalled intensity.
From Grape to Press
Alsace has a unique and complex geology which results in the area having
an almost infinite number of combined soil types. Centuries of experience
have taught the winegrowers at Hugel & Fils how best to match each
vine variety to each type of soil. The winegrowers have also discovered
that the best results are achieved when a harvest is picked by hand.
They have also learnt that a specific timetable is key to a successful
harvest.
The presses at Hugel & Fils are filled by gravity and not by the
usual obtrusive mechanical pumps that many producers use. The grapes
are then slowly crushed and only the first part of the juice is kept.
Certain vintages, which are considered to be not good enough for the
famous yellow label of Hugel & Fils, are either destroyed or sold
off in bulk to other growers.
The Cellars
Almost all the "Hugel" cellars can be found nestled underneath
16th century buildings, all of which have been extremely well-preserved.
The cellars contain oak casks, the majority of which are more than 100
years old. This also includes the famous Ste. Caterine (Catherine the
vat) which has been filled by 12 generations of Hugel’s. This
vat is dated 1715 and has even been featured in the Guinness Book of
Records.
Such tradition, however, does not exclude innovation. State-of-the
art temperature control systems are used during fermentation and much
of bottling and packaging is automated. After bottling, the wine is
cellared for at least two years, and is labelled just before despatch.
Hugel & Fils are very proud that each wine is supervised by individual
members of the family at every stage of its development.
