The master winemakers of Bordeaux bow to no-one, combining their countless years of experience (the first vines were planted, by the Romans, in AD48!) with new and exciting innovations in the art of wine. From the outstanding 1999 L'Arrivet Haut Brion Rouge which was recently awarded 89 points, to the 1997 De Chambrun, an 88-pointer and recently raved about by Decanter Magazine. 1997 De Chambrun - 2001 Haut Beychevelle Gloria - 1999 L'arrivet Haut Brion Rouge - 1999 Haut Batailley - 1997 Langoa Barton - New wines from Oddbins - the latest wine update - this time it's Spanish Wines under the spotlight!Simply extraordinary wines from Spain: Three world-class wines using the Tempranillo grape from the master winemakers of Pesquera, who have made a stellar reputation for themselves amongst lovers of all things vinous. So read on to find out more, and be sure to get your share of these gems before they are gone! From the world-renowned producers Alejandro and Esperanza Fernández,
we've just received stock of the Pesquera Crianza, and without beating
about the bush, this is currently one of most sought after Spanish wines
in the world. And in addition, we've also got their Condado de Haza,
an outstanding Tempranillo from the same renowned stable. Bringing up
the rear we have a very small quantity of the Dehesa La Granja - which
hails from the new Pesquera estate bordering the Guareña River
in the province of Zamora. From their 500 acre bodega in the town of Pesquera in Ribera del Duero, Alejandro and Esperanza Fernández have been making wines since they first licensed their bodega in 1972. Like many great winemakers, Alejandro pursued other careers before his dream of running his own bodega was realised. He first worked as a carpenter, then as a salesman, and also as a designer of agricultural machinery. During all this time, however, he grew grapes on his own small vineyard to make wine for his own consumption. Today, all the wines produced by Alejandro Fernández are made exclusively from the difficult and quick maturing Tempranillo variety, of which he is known the world over as the master. The wines are aged in combinations of American, Spanish and French barrels, and spend a minimum of 15 months maturing in oak. In our view, the passion, craft and finesse of these great winemakers is evident in every bottle. And don't just take our word for it - see below for the Wine Spectator's ratings of these outstanding wines. And remember, Oddbins.com will deliver any of these great Spanish wines right to your door.
2004 Pesquera Crianza - £16.99 per bottle or 10% off 6 / 20% off 12 bottles 93 Points, Wine Advocate #169 "The 2004 Tinto Pesquera (Crianza),
from a great vintage, is opaque purple with a fragrant nose of lead
pencil, earth, black currants, and blackberry liqueur that jumps from
the glass… This superb, beautifully balanced effort should evolve
for 4-6 years and drink well for another 10-15." - Jay Miller
2004 Condado de Haza - £14.99 per bottle or 10% off 6 / 20% off 12 bottles 91 Points, Wine Advocate # 169 "The brilliant 2004 Condado de
Haza received malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by 15 months
in American oak. Purple-coloured, it offers up fragrant aromas of cedar,
tobacco, black currants and blackberry… Drink this hedonistic
effort now and over the next 10-12 years." - Jay Miller
2001 Dehesa La Granja - £9.99 per bottle or 10% off 6 / 20% off 12 bottles Flushed with the success of Pesquera and Condado de Haza, Alejandro Fernández decided to look further afield than the hallowed turf of Ribera del Duero and recently purchased a large estate bordering the Guareña River in the province of Zamora, the origin of this stellar Tempranillo. Aromas of dark chocolate, vanilla, cherry and raspberry mingle with coffee and notes of spice. |
Other Oddbins bargains Made Exclusively for Oddbins: Bruichladdich 1993 Recioto Finish - £32.99 per bottle Inspired by the Musella winery's visit to Bruichladdich, this 13 year
old whisky was chosen for Additional Cask Evolution in their own Recioto
wine barrels. A uniquely Italian style from the Veneto region, the sweet
wine is made by the 'passito' method where grapes are air dried for several
months to concentrate flavours, sweetness and encourage Noble Rot. There
is not a trace of smoke to be found, only the perfume of perfection created
by two artisan producers.
Ardbeg 'Almost There' - £31.99 per bottle Distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2007, the nine year old ‘Almost
There’ from Ardbeg offers peated malt whisky-lovers the opportunity
to explore and enjoy the whisky’s development over the past year
since ‘Still Young’ and see its progress in the final steps
on the path to ‘peaty maturity’ at ten years old. On the palate
there is menthol, violet scented sweets, with a coffee and dark chocolate
coat, before a long, creamy finish with a hint of pine nuts. It is non
chill-filtered for maximum texture and mouthfeel.
Benromach Organic - £29.99 per bottle Benromach Organic Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the first bottled
single malt ever released to be fully certified organic by the Soil Association.
To ensure that no previous non-organic spirit had been put in the barrels
before, the casks were virgin first fills, thus this whisky has spent
a relatively short amount of time in barrel to develop strong char, vanilla
and caramel flavours. The palate has sweet vanilla and toffee flavours,
with hints of green apples and orange peel plus a rich resinous note.
Macallan 10 yo - £22.99 (Was £25.99 - SAVE £3) The Macallan 10yo is majestic and powerful, an archetypal Speyside. Macallan
only use superior 'Golden Promise' barley malt, using 90% of Scotland's
annual crop. Orange rind, sweet dumpling and Christmas cake all combine
on the nose and palate and are followed by butterscotch notes. This malt
makes a great gift if you're not certain of someone's tastes, as it is
full and smooth without the distinct iodene/peatiness of an Islay malt.
Monkey Shoulder - £17.99 (Was £19.99 - SAVE £2) A vatted, or pure, malt whisky, Monkey Shoulder is made by combining three single malts from separate distilleries. The name is derived from the name for the old injury incurred by the malt men at the distillery who turned the malting barley with a shiel (a kind of large wooden spade). Thankfully machines do this now, but this whisky has been named in honour of the passion these men had. The nose has light and delicate vanilla with floral and soft honey aromas. The palate is smooth and rounded with hints of malty sweetness, marmalade and barley sugar. The finish is monumental!Red Wine by Grape * Aghiorghitiko
