vegan Wines
Why are some wines not suitable for vegetarians? They have been "fined"
with animal products.
Fining is a process by which tiny particles are filtered out of the
wine using a product to join with the particles and make them big enough
to filter out. These are usually proteins and have traditionally been
things like egg white, gelatin (from boiled animal bones), isiginglass
(fish bladder), milk, seaweeds and clay
Non-animal alternatives include limestone, bentonite, kaolin and kieslguhr
(clays), silica gel and vegetable plaques.
Some wines are suitable for vegans and clearly state the filtration
agent used. As always, look out for The Vegan Society's trademark logo
on a range of animal-free wines
